Bull’s Blood & Beyond
Exploring the Red Wines of Hungary
Presented by Ivett Vancsik, Editor In Chief of Vince magazine; Mónika Debreczeni, Estate Manager of Vylyan Winery, Villány; Tibor Gál, Chief Winemaker of Gál Tibor Winery, Eger
Hungary is renowned for its white wines—especially the world-famous Tokaji—but its red wines are gaining international recognition for their quality, diversity, and unique sense of place. This masterclass offers an introduction into Hungary’s red wine heritage, showcasing 6–8 exceptional wines from different regions, grape varieties, winemakers and styles.
Hungary’s red winemaking tradition dates back centuries, with indigenous grapes like Kadarka and Kékfrankos playing a central role. In the 20th century, international varieties such also found a home in Hungary, particularly in warmer regions like Villány and Szekszárd, where they produce bold, structured wines. Meanwhile, regions like Eger continue to champion blends such as the legendary Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood).
Hungarian reds benefit from a wide range of terroirs allowing for diverse expressions of both local and international grapes. In the recent decades, quality has soared thanks to modern winemaking techniques, a new generation of skilled winemakers, and a focus on sustainable viticulture. As more wine lovers seek out distinctive and under-the-radar regions, Hungary’s reds are poised to impress with their character, authenticity, and value.
Join us for this exciting masterclass and discover the hidden gems of Hungarian red wines that tell a story of history, passion, and place.
