The Wine Estate
In 1994, the esteemed Count Degenfeld family embarked on an ambitious project to revive their historic wine estate located in the renowned Tokaj wine region. This endeavor was more than just a business venture; it was a heartfelt tribute to a winemaking tradition that spans over 150 years. With a deep passion for the art of winemaking, the Degenfeld family has skillfully combined their profound respect for nature and long-standing customs with the advancements of modern technology. The result is a captivating blend of heritage and innovation, where each bottle tells a story of dedication, craftsmanship, and a commitment to excellence that honors both the land and its rich history.
Organic Viticulture
Degenfeld’s 35-ha vineyards, located in Mád and Tarcal, include historical sites like Terézia and Zomborka. Since 2009, these vineyards have been managed by certified organic cultivation. A key part of this commitment is Degenfeld's use of self-produced compost to improve the soil structure and fertilise the plantations. The Gróf Degenfeld estate cultivates the three main grape varieties of the Tokaji wine region (Furmint, Hárslevelű, Yellow Muscat) as well as the three supplementary grape varieties, Kövérszőlő, Zéta and Kabar. The aszú wines, undoubtedly the most labor-demanding in the world, are made with the same unique technology for 500 years: the botrytis-affected berries with concentrated aromas, having been dried out by the wind and the sun, are picked individually by hand. In an excellent vintage, one can pick only 20-25 kg a day. The berries are soaked in fermenting base wine, then pressed and aged in Hungarian oak barrels to achieve perfect harmony and balance. The aszú wine made with this technology is a miracle, giving unforgettable experiences to everyone for many decades.
